Rosalia Artino

Rosalia Artino, age 91 of Modesto, CA passed away on October 7, 2019 surrounded by her family. Rosalia was born on November 10, 1927 in Alcara li Fusi, Italy to Nicolo Sgurelli and Francesca Sirna. Rosalia was a long time resident of Modesto for 67 years. In Italy, she married the love of her life, Salvatore (Sam) Artino. Shortly after, they immigrated to the United States to build their lives together, leaving behind all her family in Italy. Despite difficulty, she learned to read, write, and speak English, and became a U. S. citizen. They were married for 55 years and had many wonderful memories together. Rosalia is survived by her daughters: Maria (husband Roy, also known as Chico Rios,) and Frankie Fields; her two siblings, Lina Pidala, and Santina Barca of Italy; five grandchildren: Gregory Fields, Jr. (wife Michelte), Anthony Fields, Rachel Bradley (husband Cody), Roman Rios (wife Socorro), and Raeanna Rios; and lastly her seven Great-grandchildren: Milianna Rios, Micah Bradley, Sloan Fields, Gwen Fields, Giselle Rios, Farrah Fields, and Giovanni Rios. She is preceded in death by her husband Salvatore (Sam), her father Nicolo Sgurelli, mother Francesca Sgurelli, brothers Salvatore Sgurelli, and Amedeo Sgurelli. Rosalia was a Master Seamstress, and an amazing cook! She loved to feed her family every chance she had. Knitting and crocheting were also her passions, and she excelled at everything she did. She and Sam also enjoyed spending time with extended family and friends, and attending Italian functions (dinners and dances). As for her vocation outside of the home, she was a general laborer at Stanislaus Food Products for 31 years before retiring. She deeply loved her family and would do anything for them. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and was known affectionately as Nonna or Great-grandma.

Franklin & Downs Funeral Home is honored to serve the Artino family.  A Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 16, 2019 from 4pm - 8pm with a Rosary at 6pm at Franklin & Downs Funeral Home, 1050 McHenry Avenue, Modesto, CA.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, October 17, 2019 at 10am at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, 709 J Street, Modesto, CA.  Burial to follow at St. Stanislaus Catholic Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers the family has asked that charitable contributions may be made to Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund for Type 1 Diabetes. www2.jdrf.org/goto/grandmarosalia
