Tribute

Patricia Ann Ward Spikener, affectionately known by her family and friends as Pat, was born in El Dorado, Arkansas on January 10, 1931. Pat was one of eight children born to Joe and Florence Ward in a Jim Crow south. Her father passed away when she was just 12 years old. In the summer of 1947, she moved with her mother and siblings to San Francisco, California where she later graduated from Mission High School in 1948. Two years later, in the Spring of 1950, Pat married David Spikener, and they had two children; David and Arlana.

After high school graduation, Pat began a career with the federal government where she worked for 43 years. Upon retirement, Pat went back to school and completed her Associate of Arts degree at Skyline College and then her Bachelor’s degree at San Francisco State University in 1996.

During her time at San Francisco State she joined Beta Pi Sigma Sorority, Inc., Delta Chapter. Beta Pi Sigma is a non-profit business and professional organization focused on community service and providing scholarships to high school and college students. After serving in many positions in the organization, she last served as a corresponding secretary, and she was simultaneously active in the Order of the Eastern Star (Bethel Chapter 31). In addition to being an active member in her Sorority, she was an active member of the local NAACP, and she was an active member of Providence Baptist Church where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday school, and fed the homeless every Thursday evening.

Later in life Pat moved to Modesto, California with Syster Onochie. There she was known as “Mother” and “Momma P”. She joined Abundant Life Christian Center, became an active member of the Daughters of Zion, traveled, and attended many social events. Pat was loved and well taken care of. She lived a full life until the time of her passing. She departed this life on April 28, 2021 at 4:28 p.m, just one day before her 71st wedding anniversary.

Pat was very generous and thoughtful, and she never forgot a birthday. She was kind and always knew just what to say to lift your spirit. She was a great friend, a great teacher, and a great motivator. Pat was a great daughter, sister and wife, she was a great mother, grandmother and aunt.  She meant everything to her family.

Pat leaves to cherish her memory two children; David P. Spikener and Arlana P. Spikener (Melvin Morehead), six grandchildren; David Spikener, Jr., Torrie Spikener, Damon Spikener, Devin Spikener, Charles Austin Jr. (Tiara), Khala Coley, D’Andrae Morehead, Brooke Wenceslao (Teddy), and Kelvin Morehead (Tyre). Pat also leaves behind Syster Onochie and her children, and her loving extended family in Modesto.

Pat’s family wishes to express gratitude and appreciation for all of the prayers, well wishes and support they have received during this journey.

Pat will be interned at Skylawn Memorial Park, Friday May 14, 2021 at 2:45pm in San Mateo, California.
