Mathilda “Tillie” Evelyn Owens, lifelong resident of the Modesto area, passed away Saturday, July 7th, at the age of 100. She was born June 12, 1918 in Gustine, CA to the late John and Mary Alice Almeida. In addition to being a loving wife and caring mother, Tillie worked as an office manager for the Milk Producers Association for 22 years. She was an active parishioner of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and a member of the Catholic Daughters. She enjoyed gardening and always had freshly baked cookies on hand. Mostly she loved to travel with her late husband, George, in their travel trailer. They visited 48 states and parts of Canada.
Tillie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 74 years, George Emil Owens, and daughter, Kathleen Alton. She is survived by her children, Mike (Jill) Owens and Chris (Jamie) Owens; grandchildren, Kristi Alton, Robert (Holly) Alton, Molly (Gareth) Finucane, Nick (Abby) Owens, Joaquin (Kate) Owens, Asa Owens, and Anna Owens, and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Thursday, July 12th at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, 709 J Street, with a visitation at 10:30 a.m., and a Recitation of the Rosary and Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. Committal services to follow at St. Stanislaus Catholic Cemetery, 1141 Scenic Drive.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Joseph’s Youth Scholarship Fund, Optimal Hospice, or the American Cancer Society, in Tillie’s name.
