Martha Josephine Gelsomini, 89, passed away peacefully on Wednesday at her home surrounded by family. Martha was born February 22, 1932 in San Francisco, California. She attended grammar school in Benecia, Ca. She graduated from St. Rose High School in San Francisco, Ca. After graduation, she was an office clerk at Tillie Lewis Cannery in Modesto.
In 1956, she met the love of her live, Silvano through mutual friends and they were married in 1957. Together they were able to purchase the business Memorial Art Company in 1962 which they owned and operated in Modesto for 40 years. After retiring in 2002 she still helped in the office after her daughter and son-in-law took over the business.
In her younger years she enjoyed attending dinner-dances with her husband. More recently she enjoyed playing Bingo & Skipbo. As well as going to Accordion Night and listening to music, attending various activities at the Modesto Senior Citizens Center and spending time with her family. She was a member of the Italian Catholic Federation for 40 years, and a former member of the Dante Club and Stanislaus County Swiss Club.
She is survived by her son, Sisto Gelsomini of Stockton, CA; daughter, Regina (Mike) Goncalves of Modesto, Ca, and her grandchildren; Zeth, Gianna & Silvano Gelsomini of Stockton, Ca. and many cousins as well as nieces & nephews in Italy.
She was proceeded in death by her husband, Silvano Gelsomini, infant daughter, Regina Catherine Gelsomini and her mother Josephine Isola.
A special thank you to her caregivers Mena and Nora who cared for her for many years and others for their dedication and loving support, we will be forever grateful.
A Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 20th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a Vigil service starting at 6:00 p.m. at Franklin & Downs Funeral Home, 1050 McHenry Ave, in Modesto. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, January 21st at 11:30 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 1813 Oakdale Rd, with entombment to follow at St. Stanislaus Catholic Cemetery, 1141 Scenic Dr, in Modesto.
