DEBBIE BREE

July 5, 1935 – December 31, 2020

Deborah Ploss Bree (“Debbie”) went home to be with her Lord on New Year’s Eve, 2020.  Debbie left behind her husband of 63 years, John, and children Gretchen Brown (Jeff) and John (Jan), plus four grandchildren, Nathaniel, Tyler, Lindsay and Justin.

Debbie was loved by all for her engaging style, great sense of humor, and had a gift of making people feel at home, welcomed, and appreciated. She gave her all to support and encourage her husband, her children, and her grandchildren. She was the consummate hostess who enjoyed entertaining and was well known for hosting the family’s annual New Years Day party. She was an accomplished pianist, a licensed airplane pilot, a talented stained glass and needlepoint artist, an excellent seamstress, cook, and homemaker who loved to travel.

Debbie was born and raised in Oakland and Berkeley, attended UC Berkeley where she was a member of Delta Gamma sorority, and graduated from UC Davis. She met her husband, John, at UC Davis, and after their marriage they moved to the small farming community of Delano, California, where her husband worked in the wine business.  There she and a friend founded Little Folks School, a pre-school which is still in existence today.  Debbie was active in both Boy and Girl Scouts, local community organizations, PEO, and her local church as organist and choir director.

Debbie and her family moved to Riverbank in 1969 where she remained busy with her husband and children’s activities, her church as organist and choir director, the Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary, USO, Boy Scouts, as Past President of the Women’s Auxiliary of Memorial Hospital, and with PEO.  She also loved working for the Modesto Symphony and the Stanislaus County in temporary roles.  Most recently she worked with her family in their vineyard and winery in Sutter Creek.

A memorial service will be held for Debbie at a future date to be determined.  Remembrances may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (https://www.jdrf.org/donate/) or to the Alzheimer/Dementia Support Center of Modesto (adsc-Modesto.org).  Written remembrances may be made on the Franklin and Downs website.
