Betty L. Griffith

Betty Lou Gorrall Griffith, 98, passed away peacefully at Lidia's Blessed Care Home in Modesto on January 15th, 2018. Betty was born in Lincoln, Nebraska but moved to California 80 years ago with her aunt and two sisters after losing both of her parents. She was married to Trevor Griffith for nearly 50 years before he died in 1992. They had two girls, Mimi Thompson and Carole Phillips. Betty lived in the same house in Modesto for 70 years. Betty and Trevor, together with their business partner Joe Gere, were the original owners of Valley Sporting Goods in downtown Modesto. Betty loved to read, enjoyed golfing at Del Rio Country Club and was an avid bridge player for many years. She was a member at Centenary Methodist Church.
Betty is survived by her sister Mary Mooneyham, her daughter Carole and son in law Bob Phillips, her 4 grandchildren, Sean (Kristen) Thompson, Christina (Jeremy) Callahan, Jeff (Holly) Phillips and Lisa (Chase) Armour. She also had 9 great grandchildren who felt at home in her presence. Betty was preceded in death by her daughter Mimi, her husband Trevor, her sister Evelyn Brinkman Cooley and her son-in-law Gene Thompson.
Betty's family was loved deeply by her. They knew her enjoyment through her generous spirit and her great delight in young kids. Her family and friends will celebrate her life on Tuesday, January 30th at Modesto Covenant Church, 913 Floyd Ave. at 2:00pm with a reception immediately following at the church. In lieu of flowers, please make remembrances in Betty's name to The Salvation Army of Modesto or the Stanislaus County Library.
